JACL Oratorical Competition!

And now a message from our beloved Conrad Ohashi!

Hi NSU Members,

If you’re bored with life, there is a wonderful opportunity to spice things up a little.  This message will also apply to NSU members who wither in lack of attention.  If you are the latter, please repeat the first sentence out loud, but replace the word “you’re” with “I am”.

The Japanese American Citizen’s League (JACL) is hosting the 2008 Dr. Roy Nishikawa Oratorical Competition on Sunday, April 20, 2008.  The topic of your speech will be:

“The current generation of Japanese American youth faces issues of growing ethnic and generational diversity within the community.  As a youth member of the Japanese American Citizens League, how will you approach this challenge of increasing diversity to meet the needs of the changing community?”

If this message strikes some interest or any of the six other human emotions, please contact me for more information @ (858) 405-4235.  Or e-mail me at conrad.ohashi at gmail.com.  You need not be a “Japanese American youth” to apply.  I will also personally sponsor any willing competitor–a deal which comes with free issues of the Pacific Citizen and a youth membership to the largest and oldest Asian American civil rights organization in the country.

You may also directly contact JACL by calling the PSW District Office at (213) 626-4471.  Ask for Craig.  More details are in the flyer available HERE.

If more than 3 people from the organization enter AND SPEAK at the event, not only will I sponsor every individual, but I will donate $100 to NSU Banquet or an NSU event of your choice.  I will not even be a judge of the content–so there will be no pressure.  Only guilt.

Please kindly encourage your current and potential officers to do this.  It’s a great opportunity to see that a Japanese American Community is not vaporware.  (Looks good on a resume too!) Also, the event will be in Little Tokyo.  Buy something from the Mom and Pop stores.

I look forward to your participation.

With kind regards,

Conrad Ohashi
