The Nikkei Student Union (formerly known as the Japanese American Society established in 1988) is the oldest and largest Japanese-interest organization on the UCSD campus. There is no need to be Japanese to be in the club, but we do ask that you have some interest in Japanese or Japanese-American culture, as that is what we strive to represent. Although we are a cultural club and hold cultural events, the majority of our events are social, in order to create a friendly and welcoming environment for everyone and anyone.

A. Nikkei is a Japanese word meaning “of Japanese decent.”
Q. Do I have to be Japanese to be in the club?
A. Not at all! NSU welcomes people of all ethnicities, and we encourage everyone to join! It is a Japanese interest organization only.
Q. Are all of your events culturally related?
A. No. NSU provides a variety of events for its members that range from social, club supportive and culturally related events to educate our members and the community at large of the Japanese and Japanese-American culture.
Q. Do you hold events with other clubs?
A. Yes we do. We often plan things that allow us to interact with other clubs on campus such as, Kaibigang Pilipino and APSA (Asian Pacific Student Alliance).
